The Bureau of Land Management has announced plans to go forward with the roundup and removal of wild horses from the Onaqui Herd Management Area in Utah. BLM estimates that the wild horse population at Onaqui will be about 586 wild horses by the time a 2019 roundup commences. The agency plans to remove 465.

Message:

I am writing to urge the Bureau of Land Management to drop its planned removal of wild horses from the Onaqui Mountain Herd Management Area. For the good of the future of this much-loved herd, the BLM should instead work with willing advocacy organizations to dramatically increase field darting of mares with safe, proven and humane fertility control vaccine.

The BLM-set "Appropriate Management Level" (AML) for the 205,394-acre Onaqui Mountain HMA of 121-210 wild horses is very low -- as low as one horse for every 1,697 acres.

Moreover, while BLM says that the condition of the range is compromised, it continues to allow 19,235 Animal Unit Months of private livestock to graze on allotments overlapping the HMA. That's the equivalent of 1,603 cow / calf pairs or 8,015 sheep.

BLM's 2018 Environmental Assessment wrongly eliminated cheaper, humane alternatives to the capture and removal of wild horses: adjustments to AML, reduction of livestock numbers, and the simplest way of affecting the population growth rate: increasing the number of mares receiving fertility control.
