Please urge your members of Congress to pass the Save America’s Forgotten Equines Act (H.R. 1661 / S. 775), which would ban horse slaughter as well as the transportation of horses out of the country for slaughter.
Horse slaughter is wholly un-American. Polls show that regardless of political party Americans overwhelmingly oppose the slaughter of horses, which have played such an important role in our history and culture.
With help from people like you, Return to Freedom and others have successfully lobbied for language placed in annual federal funding bills that creates a year-to-year ban on horse slaughter in the United States. Congress has also barred government agencies from selling captured wild horses and burros to slaughter.
Sadly, this has not stopped the export of domestic horses and horses that once freely roamed our public lands from being exported to Mexico or Canada for slaughter. A total of 19,915 American horses were shipped to their deaths in 2024.
Even one is too many.
Congress must shut down this cruel, foreign-driven business. It subjects healthy domestic and wild equines to inhumane shipment and slaughter and puts human health at risk because of the many medications ingested by American horses that are unsafe for human consumption.
