Gabriela is a stunning strawberry roan mare from the Hart Mountain herd. She was born on the sanctuary on January 8, 2007. Gabriela inherited her beautiful coloring from her mother, Belle and her father Mystic, a beautiful liver roan stallion who passed away in October of 2014. Both Belle and Mystic were captured off of their home range on the Hart Mountain Fish and Wildlife Refuge in Southeastern Oregon. Gabriela stands out from the many roan herd mates in the Hart Mountain herd because of the unique splash of white on her left side.
Dr. Luke is a charismatic and sweet burro who is estimated to have been born in 2012. Dr. Luke was captured from Black Mountain, Arizona and came to live at Return to Freedom’s sanctuary with some of his friends in 2015. The Black Mountain burros explore every bit of 2000 acres in the rolling oak-studded hills at RTF’s San Luis Obispo sanctuary. Dr. Luke is fond of human interaction and will pause a while with visitors while his shyer friends watch from a safe distance. Photo by Paloma Ianes.
Silver King is a noble white harem band stallion captured on October 3, 2010 from the remote 606,000 acre Silver King Herd Management Area in Northwestern Nevada. Stampeded by deafening helicopters, Silver King and his mares, most pregnant, were chased relentlessly over dangerous terrain. With the help of an equine advocate/photographer, we were able to track down Silver King’s lead mare Grace and two other mares from his band in a BLM holding facility. They have been reunited at Return to Freedom’s American Wild Horse Sanctuary in San Luis Obispo CA. Photo by Paloma Ianes.
