Come along with your kids to help us out at the sanctuary for the day. Learn what it takes to run a wild horse sanctuary: learn about what horses eat, help ranch staff with feeding, manure scooping, and grooming a tame burro or horse. End the afternoon among the wild horse herds and activities with special guests!
Light refreshments, healthy snacks, fruits, and beverages are provided. Recommended for children ages 8-16.
Suggested participation fee is $50 for two adults or per adult/child pair and $15 for each additional child or adult (an additional parent, sibling, or friend).
Here are some of the animals you are likely to meet:

At 9:40 a.m. on the sunny morning of Dec. 16, 2018, Stella gave birth to this pretty filly – an early holiday present for all of us here at Return to Freedom. Because RTF uses the fertility control vaccine PZP, births at the sanctuary are a rare but happy event. Stella is what we call a "non-responder" to PZP, so she may foal every few years. Confident little Nora has already shown herself to be independent, curious and smart. She began whinnying at the feed truck when she was less than a week old, even though she wasn't yet eating hay. Spirit was used as an inspiration and model for the artists and animators during the making of the 2002 DreamWorks animated film Spirit: Stallion of the Cimarron. In April 2002, after the completion of the film, DreamWorks relocated Spirit to Return to Freedom's Wild Horse Sanctuary, where he serves as a prominent ambassador of the Kiger Mustang breed. At his new home, Spirit spend his days exploring large pastures at the Sanctuary and enjoying new friends. We are delighted to create a new home for Spirit where he can continue to thrive and inspire our visitors to preserve the heritage of these magnificent animals. Jasper was only a few months old when he was captured from his home range in Nevada's high desert. In 2000, the family who cared for him brought him to RTF due to his rambunctious behavior at the time. Now a mature burro and because of a condition with his short tendons, he has needed special heels added to his back hooves. He has become the honorary sheriff here and enjoys wandering about freely and visiting everyone!
Minuet, one of two of our potbellied pigs was rescued after being found wandering and pregnant on the streets of Los Angeles by animal control. She came to live with us in Lompoc, CA and soon after had piglets. We found homes for them with the help of a loyal supporter of RTF. Minuet loves watermelon, lettuce, carrots, and apples!
